When Hughes bounded up to you the next day sporting an ear-to-ear grin, you knew immediately that he was up to something that probably involved you. Unfortunately, as you were preparing to about-face and flee from whatever trouble he would inevitably drag you into, he snatched your hand and dragged you to your room while spewing some nonsense about speaking to you in private. Upon entering your room, Hughes quickly shut the door and plopped himself onto your mattress bringing you down along with him.
“I need you to help me get King Jellal and Erza together,” he blurted a little too loudly. You stared unbelievingly for a second.
“If Erza’s preoccupied with Jellal, she won’t have as much time to be mad at me,” he stated plainly. You pondered it for a moment; it actually made sense in a way. Before you could respond, Hughes continued wi

It wasn’t until later that night that Hughes returned to your room looking miserable and exhausted. You supposed that was to be expected seeing as he was likely worked harder than usual do to his attempted escape. Your musings were interrupted by Hughes throwing himself onto your bed with a sigh.
“Don’t you have your own room?” you quipped playfully.
“Yeah, but you aren’t in it,” he groaned back, voice surprisingly devoid of humor.
You weren’t quite sure what to say to that, so you were grateful when Hughes sat up and asked if you wanted to go grab something to eat instead of pursuing the matter further. Thus you found yourself trudging toward the castle kitchen alongside Hughes as he went on about the “horrors” he faced earlier that day at the hands of Erza.
“She made me do paperwork! PAPERWORK!”
“Well if you’d keep up with your work

The last few weeks had gone by ridiculously fast and, within that time, so much had happened. Edolas’ generals, including Hughes, had been defeated; this led Hughes into a depression which lasted a total of five minutes before he decided that rebuilding Edolas would be “totally amazing” and focused on that instead. King Faust had been dethroned, and Mystogan, or Jellal you supposed, had taken over; he gave you your own room in the castle, so he was fine, if a bit aloof, in your book. Most importantly, all of the magic, including the living creatures that possessed it, had been sent to Earthland. You supposed you were still here because you couldn’t use magic.
Your musings were suddenly interrupted when Hughes busted through your door frantically begging for you to hide him.
“What did you do to tick Erza off this time?” you sighed. This had become quite a common occurrence. Hughes

“I promise, you’re gonna love this,” Hughes assured you excitedly. You sighed for what must’ve been the hundredth time as Hughes led you through the halls of Edolas’ castle.
“Whoa, c’mon. It’s not that bad that you’re stuck here,” Hughes commented without looking back, you following at his heels. “I mean, you even get to stay with me ‘til I can get King Faust to give you your own place in the castle. That’s pretty amazing right?”
“I guess…” you replied half-heartedly.
In all honesty, you didn’t know why you had to stay with Hughes of all people. He’d insisted you stay at the castle because you were going to be “his new best buddy of all time”. You didn’t think he’d try anything funny, he seemed far too oblivious for that, but you still
